The Challenge

Although the Santos Basin is Brazil’s most prolific offshore producing basin, its southern ultra-deepwater sector remained largely underexplored, characterized by sparse well control, high geological uncertainty, and elevated drilling risk. Traditional exploration methods offered a limited ability to directly confirm active petroleum systems prior to drilling.

The Solution: “No More Dry Wells”

BPS and its partners developed and deployed an integrated, data-driven exploration workflow designed to directly assess subsurface hydrocarbon presence before drilling. The program combines remote sensing, geochemistry, seismic interpretation, basin modeling, and AI-based risk assessment into a single predictive framework.

Results and Validation

The methodology was tested and validated in the Santos Basin, where its predictions aligned with subsequent discoveries, including BP’s Bumerangue discovery and Petrobras/CNODC’s Aram discovery. These results confirmed the presence of active petroleum systems and demonstrated the workflow’s predictive power in frontier settings.
