AI-Driven Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator (DHI) Technology

BPS, in partnership with Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), successfully developed and executed this project under the ANP Research, Development & Innovation (RDI) Clause. The initiative demonstrates BPS’s capability to structure, manage, and deliver high-impact RDI programs that convert regulatory investment into strategic exploration advantage.

The project introduced an innovative methodology for the direct detection of active petroleum systems in ultra-deepwater pre-salt frontier areas. By integrating Machine Learning, Fuzzy Logic, SAR satellite imagery, 4D inverse oceanographic modeling, multibeam bathymetry, and 2D/3D geophysical data, BPS developed a proprietary workflow capable of identifying and validating natural hydrocarbon seepage linked to subsurface accumulations.

From Regulatory Obligation to Strategic Differentiation

More than 1,000 SAR satellite images were processed using advanced data science algorithms to distinguish natural oil slicks from anthropogenic spills based on 178 analytical attributes. The methodology led to the identification of a major persistent seep cluster in ultra-deepwater Santos Basin, later validated through integrated seismic, gravimetric, magnetic, and bathymetric analysis.

The result is a regional-scale probabilistic mapping tool for active seepage and hydrocarbon accumulations — providing direct evidence of petroleum system activity and significantly reducing early-stage exploration uncertainty.
