Among the Brazilian offshore basins, Pelotas is considered by many to be the last frontier in hydrocarbon exploration of the South Atlantic Realm. Although the basin lacks the prolific pre-salt lower Cretaceous Sag and Rift lacustrine sedimentary sections present in the Santos Basin, it has a very similar structural and stratigraphic correlation with the post-salt of southern Santos and its South Atlantic counterpart, the Walvis Basin, in Namibia.
